4140 and 4340 Alloy Steel Machining Guide — Pre-hardened and Annealed
4140 and 4340 are the workhorses of oilfield-grade alloy steel — used for wellhead spools, downhole tool bodies, shafts, and structural components. Condition matters — annealed vs pre-hardened
4140 and 4340 are available in annealed (~200 BHN, ~22 HRC) and pre-hardened (~28–32 HRC, sometimes to 35 HRC). Pre-hardened is what most oilfield-spec material shows up as. Both machine well; pre-hardened requires slightly more disciplined feeds and better tooling.
Post-machining heat treatment can push 4140/4340 to 40+ HRC for strength-critical parts. Coordinate with the heat-treat vendor on dimensional stock.
